Georgia Totto O'Keeffe (November 15, 1887 – March 6, 1986) was an American artist best known for her paintings of enlarged flowers, New York skyscrapers, and New Mexico landscapes. O'Keeffe has been recognized as the "Mother of American modernism”. She created many forms of abstract art, including close-ups of flowers that many interpreted as representations of women's genitalia. She received unprecedented acceptance as a woman artist in the fine art world due to her powerful graphic images, and became the highest paid American woman artist after moving to New York City. O'Keeffe currently holds the record for the highest price paid for a painting by a woman.
