Maya Angelou (April 4, 1928 – May 28, 2014) was an American writer, poet, and civil rights activist. Born Marguerite Annie Johnson, Angelou challenged traditional narratives as an autobiographer, and is best known for her 1969 memoir I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings, which depicts her life up to age 17. I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings defied the marginalization of black female writers to present themselves as central characters in the literature they wrote. Angelou’s work has received countless accolades and her legacy is now widely studied in schools. Her depictions of her experiences of racism have forced white readers to explore their feelings about race and their own privileged status.
