Tomyris was a Massagetean ruler who reigned over the Massagetae, an Iranian people from Scythian pastoral-nomadic confederation of Central Asia east of the Caspian Sea. She led her armies to defend against an attack by Cyrus the Great of the Achaemenid Empire, and is said to have defeated and killed him in 530 BC (though there are several accounts of his death according to Greek historian Herodotus, so this is a debated topic). The legacy of Tomyris can be seen in both ancient and modern art and literature; she is referenced in Shakespeare’s King Henry VI and still today in the 2014 video game Civilization VI.
